First stakes of Turfway Park's Holiday-to-Winter-to-Spring Meet is $50,000 Holiday Inaugural Stakes. As often happens for Turfway's December Stakes, large field of pretty decent horses will go to post. Probably the most memorable edition of this race came in 1992 when reigning Kentucky Oaks champion, Luv Me Luv Me Not, won under Willie Martinez. Morris Code ('96) & Bourbon Belle ('99) were also classy past winners.
Helen Belen (10-1) & Brian Hernandez filled up my wallet at Churchill last month winning @ 15-1 on College Scholarship Day (November 11).
Dr. Diamonds Prize (5-1) almost did they same for me at Keeneland when finishing 3rd at 76-1 in Grade 2 Raven Run. She almost stole the show. Recently fired KY State Steward John Veitch DQ'd her to 4th to put up Jim Rome's horse (who had flattened out & was beat). Horrible travesty. One month later, Goldikova wipes out the Breeders' Cup Mile field and Veitch & company leaves her up. Veitch & his crew never had any consistency in their decisions & seemed to play favorites based on circumstances & ownership. My opinion.
Five Star Fun is only 4-1. Seems way too low, especially w/Greta Kuntzweiler riding. She was winless throughout Churchill's month-long meet.
Fortune Play (8-1) has been good to me too. Not certain about Ramon Vasquez in the saddle, but, it is Turfway.
Boxing up the three Five Star Day fillies in here (Helen, Five Star & Fortune) and thinking the racing gods might make one up to Dr. Diamonds Prize too. Four horse exacta box for $2 ($24), .50 cent tri box ($12) & .10 cent super ($2.40). Let's also put $12 win & place on Helen. If Fortune Play stays 8-1 or better, we'll put $4 across the board on her too.
Yes, yes, I get it...my finishing kick at Churchill last week smelled about as well as Hitler's dog's nose...awful. Send your Holiday Inaugural winner to John@ESPNLouisville.com by 9:00p tonight (Dec. 3) & if you're first in with the winner, TASTY $25 coming your way from The Sports & Social Club.
